Bobbie’s Response/Wrath

Bobbie Johnson got maddddd! It’s funny how quick he found our class’s stuff. I assume he was pretty annoyed by the time he got to my blog, but hey, what are you gonna do? I’m sure I would be annoyed if twenty people had just called me a terrible journalist, even though I have a job and they do not.

I like the part in his response to our posts where he talks about how we, as students, are afraid to take risks but quick to criticize. I think that’s so true, especially here. I think this is an important lesson, Mr. Bobbie Johnson teaches us. I don’t know if this assignment was planned so that we would rip him up and then he would ream us out or what. I think it is good though because you have to learn accountability at some point.

I also have to admit that I didn’t read the part after the multimedia 101 post where he lists the findings of his multimedia experiment. I don’t know if that was a good thing or bad thing, because I pretty much said the same thing that he did about himself, only in more critical words.

Even with all our deflating ascertains of his work, I think Bobbie Johnson will live on, he will blog again. His head is in the right place I think. Just for a final note, the picture of BJ in the raincoat on his blog looks exactly like this kid who gives tours of Boston’s graveyard behind the statehouse. EXACTLY like him. I am certainly sure though, that it is Bobbie Johnson.

Final Pro-jects

            Final project ideas:

(Not really sure if we have to base our story ideas off of our sites that we are covering. If that’s the case I’d have to re-think it a little bit. I just assumed we were doing a story that had to be in the style of online stories produced today.)

~ The Men’s Basketball team here at Emerson is perfect for a multimedia, multi layered, web project. There are at least 11 different stories to tell from the players, as well as the Coach’s and now because of the gym, there is a fan angle too. For me, sports are really dynamic. Every game there is a chance for great video of the game, the fans, and after the game for some awesome sound bites. There are also interviews to produce and game summaries, playoff coverage hopefully, and anything else you can think of. It seems like a rich ground to pick an idea from and produce it.

~ I think a story on the Boston Court’s community service system would be interesting as well. Not many people realize how large and extensive the community service is. Not only would it be interesting to compare the way they do it in Dorchester and in Allston, I think interviewing people doing community service would produce great video. There are no murderers in community service, it’s mostly just real people who screwed up, and the stories they have are hilarious.

~ I’ve always wanted to do a story on myself, because I think I’m pretty cool. The logistics of it would be hard to straighten out, but I think it would be a cool idea.

News.com

If ever there has been a definitive answer for a question of cutting edge electronics, it is www.news.com. It is an online Mecca of technological news, reviews, downloads, and anything else you think you might want. The most confusing part for me is why their domain name is www.news.com while the website is for www.cnet.com. If that is the most troubling part of your website though, you are doing a pretty good job.

The people at Cnet are doing a GREAT job. Their coverage of the most challenging field to keep up, the technology field, on is extensive and up to date. They have headlines on the home page that give the biggest, most recent, stories the most attention. Just one tab away are all the stories Cnet carries, along with reviews of new technology, blogs, and even deals on HD TV’s and camcorders given especially to Cnet by their advertisers.

If you need help choosing a new plasma screen, or digital camera, there is a section strictly for reviews. They have thousands of reviews for everything. It’s a free consumer guide that can be extremely helpful if you really don’t know anything about technology. Also reviewed on the site are the newest and most coveted cell phones and every laptop out there.

Not surprisingly, Cnet has a large multimedia section. Cnet TV is streaming video of technology news and reviews. They cover some of the most interesting stories out there; check out the story about the porn industry choosing blu-ray or HD DVD.  There are also various picture galleries and pod casts as well as steaming audio on the site.

There is also a place where you can compare prices of all the electronics out there. They compare every thing from laptops, to mp3 players, to video games, to accessories for your computer, and so on.

Cnet has the most extensive coverage of the technology industry I have ever seen. They are every part a news service, from the hard breaking technology news, to the soft feature parts about the gamers and the porn industry. But don’t take my word for it, read it yourself. Bobbie Johnson is not really my jam…

First of all, Bobbie Johnson does NOT look the guy who is staring at you when you go to his website, www.bobbiejohnson.org. I don’t know who the guy in the raincoat is, but it most certainly is not the Bobbie Johnson who leads you through a shaky video diary of the CES electronics show in Las Vegas.  The vast array of media that he uses to cover the story is honestly unecessary. It could be the fact that he really doesnt know how to shoot good video, but really in this situation still images could be more effective.  You can only assume the horror a print journalist faces having to learn, and use broadcast tools in a short period of time. He certainly didnt seem comfortable on camera and his shots were all very shaky. There were also some problems with lighting and framing.

I dont want Bobbie to read this and think he totally sucks, because thats simply not true. The shining achievement of the whole coverage was his writing. That AND his meliflous british accent. There’s no doubt that having a british accent brings so much more to your voice. Audio is a good idea for Bobbie Johnson. It’s unblieveable how much more charming british people are than Americans. Maybe it’s not just the accent…
